Ultimate Sports Adventures – 2024 Post Camp Issue

The 2024 Twins Camp

A Week Long Battle With Mother Nature!

Heading into the 2024 Twins Camp, it was estimated that over the past 15 years of camp, we’d lost a total of 4 1/2 days of play due to rain and wet field conditions. As Tim Laudner pointed out to us this year, “We’ve had an incredible run of great weather Stan, we were probably due for a dog”.

With wet field conditions and rainy conditions, the batting cages saw plenty of action in 2024. Here Steve Karbon takes a few swings from son Nick’s pitching.  With the instructionals and rookie game being washed out on our opening Sunday, the Pro Staff had the opportunity to scout this year’s rookie class from the comfort of a roofed area.

While not a complete mutt – this year posed some interesting challenges.  By week’s end however, we had been able to get in all of the scheduled games (save 2) that we had on the schedule.  Unfortunately, one of those games was to decide our Blue Division Champions for 2024.  More about that in our next issue of the Fantasy Forum.

Despite the roughest week that even the grounds crew had ever witnessed, a great week unfolded and we’ve heard so many wonderful comments about this year’s camp.  The fact that we already have 122 registrations for 2025, would seem to be proof that while the weather was a challenge, even Mother Nature couldn’t dampen the camp spirit.

The 2024 Twins Camp Pro Staff

Back Row (L to R): Matt LeCroy, Stu Cliburn, Toby Gardenhire,Tommy Watkins, Brian Dinkelman, Frank Viola, Juan Berenguer,  Glen Perkins, Juan Rincon, Tom Brunansky, and Devin Smeltzer.   Front Row: Jeff Reardon, Phil Roof, Gene Larkin, Dick Stigman, Ron Gardenhire, Camp Director – Stan Dickman, Bert Blyleven, Jacque Jones, Tim Laudner, JC Romero and Al Newman.

Several members of our Pro Staff commented on the quality of this year’s rookie class that included 28 new campers.  As a group, they certainly brought the quality of play up a notch this year.  We were missing a few members of our Pro Staff in 2024.  Baseball Hall of Fame member, Tony Oliva, was in Cuba visiting family and we beleive that it was the first camp that he’d missed in over 25 years.  Twins Hall of Fame member Kent Hrbek had a health issue that kept him from the coaching box this year.  Steve Braun and Milt Cuyler, also members of this year’s planned Pro Staff, both had a health issue that prevented them from being with us.  We’re happy to report that all three are on the mend and back in better health.

The Camp was also thrilled to welcome a guest speaker following Friday evening’s Kangaroo Court session and dinner.  Todd Blyleven, son of our Camp Commissioner, Bert Blyleven, was on hand to share with the camp his experience at the Route 91 shooting tragedy in Las Vegas in the fall of 2017.  Todd recounted some of the events that he encountered in the 8 hour period from the time the shooting began and he was finally reunited with his family that he had ushered to safety shortly after the shooting started.  Todd explained the impact that it’s had on his life and how he continues to deal with it each day.  He explained that all of us have had some tragedy or trauma in our life that we struggle to deal with and shared some insights into his approach and challenged the audience to make sure they find the professional help that’s available and to learn how to share with others.  Everyone was moved and we’ve received several emails and texts from camp family members that have taken Todd’s advice and made breakthroughs in their own lives.  Powerful stuff.

Todd Blyleven delivers his emotional and moving discussion on his role in the Route 91 Las Vegas shooting of  2017, and the impact on his life and how he deals with it daily.

We wish to sincerely thank all of the 2024 Twins Campers and our incredible Pro Staff for another great Camp Week!  We’re already planning for another great year in 2025!  Hope to see you back again next January!

Six Join Twins Camp Hall of Fame in 2024!

The Twins Camp Hall of Fame expanded to 66 members in 2024, with five new campers and one Camp Staff member being inducted at the annual Hall of Fame Banquet.  The 2024 Twins Camp Hall of Fame inductees are (L to R): Bob Lange, Bill Trubeck, Chef George Serra, Jeff Belzer, Mark Davis and Bill Clabots.

Recently a veteran camper telephoned us to thank us for the recently completed camp.  During the call he indicated that he felt that despite the weather, it was the best camp ever.  He described the culture of the camp as almost magical. Our Twins Camp family certainly has a very special bond. A bond that exists from our campers to our Pro Staff and the support staff too.  As a result of that magic, the camp has evolved from a “bucket list” experience to an annual reunion of good friends and baseball enthusiasts that come together each January in Florida to renew those bonds and to compete in the game that we all love.

Our Hall of Fame members have demonstrated an enduring support of the Camp and the Camp experience. That support has been critical to creating a foundation for the camp’s continuing success.

In 2024, six new members joined the Camp Hall of Fame which now consists of 66 Campers and Staff members.  We are proud to say that the last  57 of these members have joined our Hall of Fame since 2009.

One of the highlights of every camp week is the Hall of Fame evening banquet when we pay tribute to our existing Hall of Fame members and welcome any new inductees to the Hall.  As part of that evening, root beer floats made with Killebrew root beer are served as dessert and as a remembrance and tribute to the Twins first National Baseball Hall of Fame inductee, Harmon Killebrew.  We were blessed to have had Harmon as a member of our Pro Staff for many years.  Jim and Rose Lundeen once again donated their fabulous Killebrew Root Beer to allow us to continue this wonderful tradition.

Again this year the camper inductees were asked to say a few words about their induction and what the camp has meant to them.  All did an excellent job and it was easy to see by everyone in attendance that the camp experience has had a profound and positive impact on their baseball and personal lives.  Friendships forged here will last a lifetime and become the driving incentive to return year after year.

In 2025, we are slated to have our largest class to date – ten new members have notified us that 2025 is their Hall of Fame Camp.  The ten we have on record include:

Mark Besser – Rick Bruce – John Green – Ben Kepple

Steve Kluvers – Scott Morvig – Dave Roiger – Tim Salter

Gerry Seurer and Tim Vernon.

Ten!  That’s a team!

If you believe that 2025 may be your HOF camp, please let us know so we can pay tribute to you next January.

Congratulations and Thank You Bill, Jeff, Mark, Bob, Bill & Chef George!  Welcome to the Hall!

Twins Campers Deliver for Lee Health Foundation’s Cancer Patients at This Year’s Charity Auction!

Camp Honorary Auctioneer, Tim Salter works his magic as the bidding takes off on another one of Rose Spangler’s beautiful quilt creations.

Chief Justice, Bert Blyleven, was joined this year by Associate Justice, Dick Stigman, for the 2024, edition of the Twins Camp’s Kangaroo Court.  Each year, camper’s face fines due to various infractions, such as looking at a third strike, leaving equipment on the field or some other faux pas in baseball protocol.  Judges Blyleven and Stigman were again successful and we are proud to report that over $8,000 in fines at this year’s two Kangaroo Court sessions were raised to assist young cancer patients in the Ft Myers area.

Those proceeds, along with the money raised at the annual charity auction on the final night, were responsible for raising over $30,000.00 for the Lee Health Foundation’s Cancer Center.  The Foundation then leverages the Camp’s donations with their annual Twins Celebrity Golf Classic to raise more than $120,000.00 each year.  By our calculations and thanks to our incredible group of campers, the Twins Camp alone has been able to raise well over $400,000 over the past 16 years.

Thank you Camp Family!

2025 Twins Camp & Wrapping up 2024

REMINDER!!!

We wish to thank the many of you that contacted Trinette on the final evening to let us know if you had any additional banquets, breakfasts or lunches to pay for.  We have historically relied on the “honor system” to receive reimbursement.  We all know the cost of food has increased dramatically and we are not insulated from those increases at Twins Camp.  If you were unable to get with Trinette on that last night, please feel free to shoot us an email.  We will begin contacting those of you who did stop by in the next few weeks as we work to wrap up the 2024 Camp.  Thanks also to those of you who have already compensated us for those additional meals.

2025 Registration

We also wish to thank the many of you that provided your name or registration form to us on that final evening.  The response for 2025 has been incredible and as we write this newsletter we are already at 122 campers that have indicated their intention to be with us in 2025.  We fully expect that we will again be in a sold out position by early this spring.

Participants of the 2024 Camp that want to take advantage of the Early Bird discount will need to send their registration form or email us by February 9th.  Only 2024 Camp participants are eligible for the Early Bird discount.

We will be updating the registration page on the website prior to March of this year.  At that time, we would ask that anyone interested in being included in the 2025 roster, please go to the website and complete a new registration form.  No deposit needs to be sent prior to April 1st, but a deposit will be required to cement your roster spot.  We don’t want to turn any potential new campers away because we believe the camp to be full.

Thank you for your understanding and your unbelievable support of the Twins Camp experience!

Rick Bruce.  Back Row: Base Coach, Stan Dickman, Mark Wolfe, Eric Nelson, Bench Coach-Bert Blyleven, Scott Hinnenkamp, Steve Kluvers, Dave Hinnenkamp & John Green.  Not pictured, Base Coach – Phil Roof.

Following the 2023 Camp, Camp Photographer, Greg Wagner approached Rick Bruce with the idea of the Twins Camp putting a team together to participate in the annual Wagner Wood Bat Classic.  Rick set about contacting those folks that fit the age criteria and who might still be in the SW Florida area.

Rick did a great job of assembling a solid group of Twins campers and the squad represented the camp well by posting a 4-3 record, and were competitive to the point of being in position to win every game except the game versus two time champions.  That game was close through the first four innings at a scoreless tie.  The Lumberjack bats came to life and the Twins were bested by a 7-1 score.

Great Job Rick and Twins Squad!

Acupuncture treatment is a big hit at 2024 Camp

Twins Acupuncture Therapist Nikki Vanacek

At the 2024 Twins Camp, a new treatment option was made available to the campers – Acupuncture. Nikki joined Twins co-worker and Massage Therapist, Kelli Bartley in treating campers this year.

The Minnesota Twins current Acupuncture Therapist, Nikki Vanacek was on hand to explain the benefits of the treatment and based on the feedback we received from Nikki and the campers, it was well received indeed.

In addition to her work with the Twins, Nikki also has a private practice – EastWest Acupuncture with locations in Eden Prairie, Excelsior and Plymouth.   Following camp she asked if we could pass a message on to you.
