Wayne "Big Fella" Hattaway is a baseball gypsy. Wayne began his career in baseball with the Mobile, Alabama Bears of the AA Southern Association in 1952. At that time the Bears were the farm team of the then Brooklyn Dodgers. He has truly devoted a lifetime of work to baseball and in his role as trainer is a "jack of all trades". In 2002 Twins Manager Ron Gardenhire conferred with then Twins General Manager, Terry Ryan, about the benefit of bringing Wayne north with the club when they broke Spring Training. According to Gardenhire, "Wayne's just awesome! He's retired from like 18 different jobs, so nobody's ever really sure if he's retired or not. He's our head motivator—that's his title. He keeps things stirred up."
The life of a professional baseball clubhouse manager is hardly a glamorous one. For most of his life, Wayne has packed gear, polished shoes, done laundry, scrubbed floors and cleaned up after ballplayers.
