Lee was signed as an amateur free agent by the Washington Senators before the 1957 season. During his career he played with four major league teams and made 359 appearances. The bulk of those appearances were made in relief, but "Stinger" demonstrated his value and flexibility by making 125 starts over the course of his career. His best season came in 1963 with the Twins when he finished with a 12-5 record and a stingy 2.62 ERA. He had another great year in 1967 for the "Impossible Dream" Red Sox when he finished with an 8-10 record and a 2.77 ERA. That year he pitched two scoreless innings in Game #3 of the World Series against the St. Louis Cardinals. Stinger can boast that he held Hall of Famers Rod Carew, Nellie Fox and Brooks Robinson to a collective .192 batting average (20-for-104). He ended his career in 1970 having posted 62 wins, 21 saves, 32 complete games, 8 shutouts and 718 strike outs in 1216 innings pitched. Lee made baseball his career working as a pitching coach for the Red Sox, Twins and Oakland Athletics.
