Juan “Senor Smoke” Berenguer began his 14 year MLB career as a free agent with the New York Mets in 1975. He posted a career record of 67-62, with 975 strikeouts and an impressive career ERA of 3.90. Juan went 8-0 with a 3.94 ERA for the 1987 World Champion Minne-sota Twins. He learned to harness his 90 plus-mph fastball, which he loved to throw inside. His effectiveness was aided by his intimidating appearance and disposition on the mound. A mean looking, husky Panamanian with long and mustache, he was known as “Pancho Villa” by his teammates. He owns two World Series rings—one with the ’84 Tigers and the other with the ’87 Twins. He missed a chance at a third with the Braves in 1991, when an off the field injury left him with a broken arm, causing him to miss the remainder of that season.
